Yes, just what you needed, another green smoothie recipe.
October in my house means Spooky Movie Month. (I can’t do scary, hence the “spooky.”) My boyfriend makes a list of spooky movies and sends it to friends and family. We all watch as many of the movies as we can and give them a grade and a short review at the end of the month. Watching spooky movies is a great way to take your mind off of the law school stress.
Last night, my boyfriend and I hosted a Spooky Movie Night Party. We watched the cult classic, Sleepaway Camp. (A campy horror film, with far too many man-crop tops, wickedly bad 80s hair, and one freaky ending.) Although technically it was a movie night, with my friends it always becomes mostly about the food and drink. My friend Brian brought an awesome BBQ Beef roast, Reena made baked brie, I made Pumpkin Pie Brownies & Pumpkin Pie Martinis, and my dear friend, Amanda made a salted caramel banana bread cake. (Pictures of all of this magic soon to come).
Anyway, needless to say I needed to eat light today. My friend Hannah – who will be running the Chicago marathon next week- is doing the 30 day green smoothie challenge! (For more details go here: http://simplegreensmoothies.com/30-day-challenge). She inspired me to cleanse from last night with a nutritious smoothie.
Here’s what’s inside:
1 cup spinach
1 cup almond milk
A spoonful of non-fat plain Greek yogurt
1/2 of a frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen strawberries and blueberries
3-5 mint leaves (torn up)
1 teaspoon Chia seeds or flax seeds
1/2 scoop whey protein powder
Blend the spinach and the almond milk first. Then add in the fruit and yogurt. Lastly, add in the seeds, protein powder, and mint leaves.
This was just what I needed to feel refreshed and back on track….Now if only there weren’t cake and brownies left in my kitchen…

Alright, so I am not as creative as other foodie bloggers out there, BUT, I have been blown away by my local farmer’s market’s fresh produce. I usually don’t get this excited about salads but these ingredients are magical. I live in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago and we have had awesome apples, carrots, onions, cilantro, red lettuce, corn, garlic, eggplant, eggs the list goes on. GO NOW winter will be here before you know it.
My salad today included, a hard boiled egg, red romaine lettuce, carrots, flax seeds, apple slices, sunflower seeds, cilantro, onions, garlic powder, sea salt, fresh pepper and balsamic vinaigrette. The salad was the perfect compliment to an afternoon of Employment Discrimination casebook reading.
As a feminist who, as a girl, (alright AND as an adult) loves all things Disney princess, I try and stay informed on the debate about how we think Disney affects the gendering process in girls. There was a great article on feministing or perhaps Slant a couple years back about how a transgender F to M was incredibly comforted by Ariel’s narrative in The Little Mermaid. There is always a lot of tension with that film, especially surrounding the song, “Kiss the girl.” Oh, yeah, and that little fact that she gives up her voice for a man.
This Jez article doesn’t add anything particularly mind-shattering to the debate, in my opinion. But, it’s a good quick read if you are interested.
I dread first posts. I’m not sure what exactly this blog will be or become. All I know is that I’m a first year law student who needs an outlet. I’m hoping to get back in touch with everything I loved before coming to law school while incorporating my new found love for the law.
I LOVE FOOD. I have a sweet tooth but I also love eating healthy. I’m gym obsessed. I love film and literature. I love fashion and traveling but currently don’t have the money for either. (The picture below is of me in St. Petersburg, Russia last summer.) I’m a feminist. I have an amazing boyfriend who I have been with for 7 years and an incredible family back on the West Coast. This blog will be filled with all this good stuff and more, like cats, lots of cats.
I’m also hoping to have my awesome friends guest post on this blog too!
